When arriving at the range, Daviess County’s Jackson Power didn’t have a great feeling about the day, but after back-to-back long puts to start his run, he realized he was locked in. The senior shot a career best 68, finishing second overall in the individual and helping lead the Panthers (310) to a 6th place finish in the Christian County Invitational. Jaxon Unsel (76), Collin Reynolds (83), and Jacob Nolan (83) rounded out the team’s top four scores.
“In the first two holes, I put myself in bad positions and I had long putts going into the hole,” Powers said. “I just kept making them and then from there on out, I just kept draining puts over and over again.”
Despite his dominant performance, Powers admitted he believed he could have done even better because he left a couple of shots short. He also stated that being in the same group of Hancock County’s Jaxon Blake allowed him to finish strong.
“He kept talking me through it, telling me to take my time and there is no need to rush because I started rushing my swing and messing up here and there,” Powers said.
Blake and the Hornets shot a 305 to finish fifth overall. Memphis Ball led the way with a 75, while Jaxon Blake finished second on the team with a 76, and Jacob Shultz and Kelby Keown both shot 77 to round out the team’s top four scores.
“We tied for our best team total for the year,” Hancock County Head Coach Jeff Shultz said. “We had four really solid rounds. Senior Memphis Ball got to play in his first invitational of the year and had a really good round, scoring a team best 75. I am really proud of him and the team.”
Also in attendance was Owensboro Catholic who shot 316, with Luke Estes (73), John William Wathen (77), Vince Hayden (79), and Triston Logsdon (87) rounding out the team’s top four scores.
“We battled some illness with two players, and overall, it wasn’t our best finish as a team, but we had some guys step up and play really well,” Owensboro Catholic Head Coach Bretnea Harvey said. “Luke Estes shot one over and has really been working on focusing himself on the course. He has been a great leader for our team this season. I’m glad to see that showing up in a meaningful way as we ramp up the end of the season. Vince and JW are always so consistent for our team, scoring right around their averages, and I’m really proud of Jace and Kyle. They played as individuals for us yesterday, but with some consistent play, Jace has earned a spot in the top five for our match this week, and I’m excited to see how he does.”
