With two games remaining in the regular season and the 9th District Tournament a week away, Owensboro Catholic Head Coach Andy Donohoe emphasized to his team that there needs to be an intensity in everything they do. That was on full display last night in the Aces’ 8-0 win over Allen County-Scottsville.
Outshooting the Patriots 27-3, the Aces took a 5-0 lead into halftime, before ending the game in the 55th minute. Andrew Bailey, Owen Brey, Luke Pfeifer, Jeremy Danetz, and Curtis Watts all scored in the first half, while JW Kurtz, Landon Condor, and Isaac Self found the back of the net in the second half.
“We got a couple of early goals, quick ones in a row,” Donohoe said. “That can sometimes go the opposite direction of what you want where people start to get to relaxed, but our guys didn’t. They kept the foot on the gas to keep going in the game. That was a positive from the group. We just wanted to add a little bit more control and creativity to the attacks and we got more of that in the second half.”
Leading 5-0 at halftime, Donohoe mentioned to his team that he wanted them to be more cerebral in what they do. He pointed out that if there isn’t space behind to run into, they can create something.
“I thought we did a better job, actually in the second half than we did in the first half, strangely,” Donohoe said. “Even though we scored five goals in the first half, but that’s what we need to add to our game. I thought we did that in the second half really well tonight, so that’s something we want to take moving forward.”
The Aces have one regular season game remining, set for this Thursday when they travel to Foundation Christian Academy, before the 9th District Tournament begins the following week.
“It’s all about intensity. We want to make sure tomorrow’s practice, Thursday’s game, Friday’s practice, and the weekend all have intensity to it so that we are in the right frame of mind going into next week.”
