The Whitesville Lions Club will hold its Annual Public Live Auction tonight, offering a wide assortment of Christmas gifts and household items while raising funds for its long-running Food Basket Program.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Whitesville Senior Center on Hwy. 54, with doors opening at 5 p.m. for viewing. Concessions — including hot dogs, chips, and drinks — will be available.

“We are excited again this year to have an outside vendor bring a truckload of auction items,” said Lion Cathy Roby, the club’s marketing and communications chairperson. “Some items include knives, hunting items, housewares, Christmas decorations, bed linen, quilts, sheet sets, throws, winter gloves, hats, socks, boxes of toys, candy, and lots of miscellaneous items.”

Roby said the vendor often surprises the crowd with unique finds.

“You just never know what this vendor will pull out of his truck,” she said. “One year, the vendor brought in flying toys to the delight of the kids attending. There is always a large variety of auction items for everyone. Each year, attendees go home with wonderful Christmas gifts for their families. It’s one of the highlights of our night to see all the attendees’ smiling faces and laughter as they bid on items and win. It’s a fun time.”

All proceeds support the Lions Club Food Basket Program, which provides roughly 40 large food baskets each year to local families in need. The baskets include hams, turkeys, vegetables, fruit, nuts, candy, and other staples.

“It’s a great feeling for our Lion Club members to deliver the baskets and to know these families are so appreciative,” Roby said. “When we deliver, we are greeted with big smiles on their faces, and we leave with one on our own. ‘Tis the season for giving, and we try to do our part in the community to make this happen.”
