Sagan Storm, a 36-year-old higher education administrator from Maceo, has announced she will run for East Daviess County Commissioner, saying her decision is rooted in a long-standing appreciation for the community she joined more than a decade ago.
Storm, who works as the Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness and Accreditation Liaison at Brescia University, is running as a Democrat.
“I came to Daviess County about 12 years ago to go to college, and I fell in love with Daviess County,” Storm said.
She added that once she saw an open seat emerge, she felt compelled to step forward.
“I think I’d be a good representative for the county. I have a young son, and I care about making sure we make positive improvements for the county and that we keep it a great place for him to want to stay when he gets older.”
Her son, who turns 7 this week, is the core of her inspiration.
“I’d definitely say my son is the main reason I’m running,” she said.
Storm said her decade-plus of experience in higher education — including policy compliance, data analysis, and working across departments — has equipped her with skills she believes translate directly to Fiscal Court.
“I’m an educator at heart. I work with a lot of different people, so I’m great at bringing people together,” she said. “A lot of that policy compliance, you can bring that into the fiscal court and any government entity.”
Storm emphasized that her leadership style centers on listening, both to subject-matter experts and to residents directly affected by policy decisions.
“First, I listen,” she said. “I might have a strong opinion, but if everyone in East Daviess County is telling me something else, I need to do what they want to do. And sometimes you don’t know what they want if you’re not going out there and listening.”
She said she plans to be “readily accessible,” noting that constituents will be able to call, email, or talk with her in person as she spends time traveling county roads with her husband and attending community events.
Storm said public safety and honest communication are her two non-negotiable priorities, but she also stressed the importance of building opportunities for young people, especially those preparing to enter the workforce.
“I want our high school graduates and our college graduates to find careers here in Daviess County. I don’t want them to have to look elsewhere,” she said.
To accomplish that, Storm believes County leaders must consider a broader spectrum of industries and remain open to new ideas.
“When someone comes in and might want to start a business or bring something novel to us, we’ve got to be able to educate ourselves and talk to our kids and see if it’s something our high schoolers are interested in, something that will keep them here longer,” she said.
Storm lives in Maceo with her husband and son. She said she looks forward to meeting more residents throughout the campaign.
“There’s no place like Daviess County,” she said. “I want to help keep it strong for generations to come.”
