With temperatures expected to dip below freezing next week, the Daniel Pitino Shelter will activate its White Flag emergency warming shelter from Monday, Dec. 1, through Friday, Dec. 5.
The National Weather Service in Paducah has forecasted temperatures or wind chills at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit during that period. The White Flag initiative signals the opening of overnight emergency shelter space for all men, women, and children in need.
The shelter, located at 501 Walnut Street in Owensboro, will operate nightly from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. Meals will be provided during regularly scheduled meal times.
Free transportation will be available via Owensboro Transit System from Monday through Friday between 4-6 p.m. Riders should inform drivers they are heading to the White Flag Shelter. For weekend transportation, individuals should call the shelter directly at 270-688-9000.
White Flag is coordinated by Daviess County Emergency Management and the Homeless Coalition of Ohio Valley, with support from Daviess County Fiscal Court, the City of Owensboro, and other participating shelters throughout the county.
