Owensboro native Clayton Kingsley is bringing modular dock systems to lake communities across Kentucky with Marine Dock Supply, a business that specializes in prefabricated boat docks made from steel and composite materials.
Kingsley took over the business from his uncle and started running it full-time after graduating from college in May 2025. He currently serves clients on various bodies of water across central and western Kentucky.
“We have steel frame boat docks, all prefabricated by a company up in Minnesota,” Kingsley said. “They send the kits down to me, and we can part and piece them together to make a full dock. Everything’s modular.”
Marine Dock Supply is a licensed dealer for Waterfront Brands, which includes premium dock and lift brands like ShoreMaster, Rhino Marine Systems, PolyDock Products, and HydroHoist. That allows Kingsley to offer a range of high-end materials and build types, including galvanized steel frames, stainless steel, and floating docks made from composite plastic or polyurethane.
“We can order just about anything at the top of the market,” he said.
While the company offers some commercial work, the primary customer base is residential. Customers can choose between full-service dock installation or pickup-ready builds with cut drawings and instructions for self-assembly.
Kingsley typically begins by reviewing the proposed dock site on Google Maps, creating a design and quote based on that layout. If the customer is interested, he’ll make a site visit to verify details and finalize the plan.
“I look over the site on Google Maps, build the dock out on paper, and send over a quote,” Kingsley said. “If they’re interested, I’ll make a trip out to verify the layout and adjust the bid if needed.”
Unlike traditional wood docks that often require concrete footers and in-ground posts, Marine Dock Supply docks are built using galvanized steel poles driven into the lakebed using a heavy-duty post driver.
“It’s a more expensive product than traditional wood docks, but it’s built to last,” Kingsley said. “The materials hold up better in water, ice, snow — all the harsh elements.”
He primarily serves customers around Barron River, Nolin Lake, Kentucky Lake, Rough River Lake, and Lake Barkley. While he tends to avoid the Ohio River due to fluctuating water levels and unpredictable debris, Kingsley said the docks are a great fit for calmer lakes like Kingfisher or Carpenter in the Owensboro area.
Marine Dock Supply operates seasonally, with most installs happening between April and the fall. Kingsley said his company is equipped to build several docks per year and maintains a small stock of jet ski ports and accessories stored at family property near Lake Barkley.
“If someone wants to pick up the dock and build it themselves, I can price it out and send all the instructions and drawings they’ll need,” Kingsley said.
