One of the top teams in the 3rd Region, Daviess County’s offense is well known, but it was their defense that stole the show last night. From the start of the game, the Panthers suffocated Trinity (Whitesville), holding them to four points in the first half en route to a 70-19 road win.
“I thought our guys were better defensively, getting into our gaps,” Daviess County Head Coach Neil Hayden said. “We have been stressing being a better half court defensive team and I thought we were better at that tonight.”
The Panthers’ defense recorded four steals and nine blocks, eight of which came from DeAaron Watkins. Daviess County’s big man was a menace in the paint, finishing with eight points, eight blocks, seven rebounds, and three assists.
Jonathan Moss found his offensive stride early, scoring 15 of game-high 19 points in the first half. A threat from deep, Moss showcased his versatility, continuously getting to the hoop in transition, while also dishing out six assists.
Moss’s new backcourt mate, Michael Acton, has quickly gelled with the offense, scoring 16 points on 7/10 shooting, eight of which came in the third quarter. Davyn Randolph also found his shot in the third quarter, hitting three of his four threes.
Extending their lead in the third quarter, the Panthers were able to go deep into their bench, allowing the majority of their young players some valuable experience.
“I think we have a good young group coming here,” Hayden said. “We want to keep the success going, even with these guys, so it was a good chance for these guys to get to play.”
For the Raiders, Thomas Payne led the team in scoring with five points, while Ian Roby and Mason Smith both hit a three. Trinity (Whitesville) is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Dawson Springs, while the are at Henderson County later tonight.
