Daviess County is developing a 12-station outdoor archery range on newly acquired property at the Mattingly Target Shooting Range, with officials also advancing pickleball upgrades at Yellow Creek Park.
The County purchased 13.07 acres in early 2025 for $135,000, expanding the Mattingly site’s footprint to nearly 90 acres. The project is in response to the rapid growth of youth and competitive archery in the region.
“We’re seeing high school, college, and even adult archery programs take off,” said Judge-Executive Charlie Castlen. “There’s demand, and this can be a real economic driver.”
The County is collaborating with the Owensboro Archery Club on course layout, and funds for 3D targets have already been budgeted for FY 2025-26.
“This is a great example of smart land use,” Castlen added. “When land adjacent to a public facility becomes available, it makes sense to consider expansion.”
Meanwhile, design work is nearly complete for the new pickleball courts at Yellow Creek Park. The project will be put out for bids immediately upon completion of the drawings.
“These recreational amenities bring people into our community and create opportunities for events, tournaments, and wellness,” Castlen said.
