John Kirkpatrick and Kaleb Carter of the Owensboro Times recently teamed up with Volunteer Owensboro for a “Good Deed Duel,” supporting the nonprofit organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

The lighthearted competition paired Kirkpatrick and Carter against Amy Nix and Volunteer Owensboro’s Randy Lanham in a race to assemble and deliver beds for children in need — all while raising awareness for a cause close to the heart of many in the community.

“This is what it’s all about,” Lanham said. “Volunteer Owensboro’s mission is to connect people to local nonprofits and give them opportunities to serve. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a perfect example of that. They’re doing incredible work to make sure no child in our area sleeps on the floor.”

Kirkpatrick said the experience was a meaningful one — even if the weather wasn’t ideal.

“It’s always fun to share Owensboro’s stories, and Sleep in Heavenly Peace has an incredible story to tell,” Kirkpatrick said. “We’re grateful to Randy Lanham and Volunteer Owensboro for continuing to shine a light on so many worthy causes and volunteer opportunities in our community. It’s always fun to work with Randy.”

Carter echoed that sentiment.

“Being part of something that directly helps local families is such a rewarding feeling,” Carter said. “This was a great reminder that even a little time and effort can go a long way in someone’s life.”
