A White Flag emergency shelter will open this weekend in Owensboro as temperatures are expected to fall below freezing, according to Daviess County Emergency Management.
The National Weather Service in Paducah is forecasting wind chills at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit for Saturday, Jan. 10, and Sunday, Jan. 11. In response, local agencies are activating the White Flag program, which provides overnight shelter for anyone in need.
The Daniel Pitino Shelter, located at 501 Walnut Street, will serve as the designated White Flag site and will be open from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. both nights. The shelter welcomes all men, women, and children seeking refuge from the cold.
Free transportation to the shelter is available through Owensboro Transit System from 4-6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Passengers should notify the driver they are heading to the White Flag Shelter. However, the Daniel Pitino Shelter does not provide its own transportation services.
Meals will be available at the shelter during their regularly scheduled meal hours.
The White Flag initiative is coordinated by Daviess County Emergency Management and the Homeless Coalition of Ohio Valley, with support from Daviess County Fiscal Court, the City of Owensboro, and local shelters.
