The Owensboro Bridge, commonly known as the Blue Bridge or Glover Cary Bridge, reopened to traffic after a months-long closure for major repairs. The historic Ohio River crossing was closed July 14, 2025, for what transportation officials originally described as a 90-day project focused on deck replacement and structural improvements.
The bridge, which first opened in 1940, serves as a key connection between Owensboro and southern Indiana.
The closure stretched well beyond the original timeline after construction delays, material availability issues, and additional steel repairs were identified. The contractor was assessed liquidated damages totaling more than $1.5 million as reopening dates were repeatedly pushed back.
With work now complete, officials say the repairs are expected to extend the life of the bridge for years to come and restore a familiar route for local commuters and travelers.
