A new roundabout is scheduled for construction at a busy Owensboro intersection, with work set to begin March 1.
A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will begin building the roundabout at the intersection of KY 298 (Old Hartford Road), KY 3143 (Fairview Drive) and Foors Lane. The project is intended to ease congestion and improve traffic flow along the corridor.
Construction will take place in multiple phases. During the first phase, motorists should expect occasional narrowed lanes and flaggers in or near the intersection. Some nighttime lane closures are also possible.
During the second phase, Foors Lane south of the intersection will be closed, and the intersection will temporarily operate as a three-way stop.
In the third phase, Foors Lane will reopen, though drivers should remain alert for changing traffic patterns as work continues.
Transportation officials say roundabouts are a nationally proven safety measure. Studies have shown roundabouts can reduce overall crashes by 37% and decrease fatal crashes by as much as 90% by reducing conflict points and minimizing the risk of right-angle collisions.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-November.
