Daviess County’s Kali Nichols’ attempt to make history came to a halt yesterday afternoon. Looking to becoming the first wrestling State Champion in program history, Nichols fell just short against Henry Clay’s Sianni Appolon.

Despite the loss, Nichols finished the season 37-1 and added a third Region 1 title to her trophy case.

Nichols began her State Tournament run with a dominating 17-2 win over Ballard’s Zahriyah Wales and followed that up with victories over Scott County’s Bailey Boyd (17-2) and Campbell County’s McAyla Steffen (18-1), before falling in the finals.

She was joined at the tournament by fellow Lady Panthers Kaylee Klee, who finished 1-2 at 145, and Mariya Meh, who went 0-2 at 235.
