Owensboro Municipal Utilities has been recognized on the national level for its commitment to workplace safety, earning the American Public Power Association’s Safety Award of Excellence for 2025.
OMU received the Diamond designation for the second consecutive year in its category, which includes utilities with 110,000 to 249,999 worker-hours of annual exposure.
“This award is a testament to the safety culture we have built, and the hard work that goes into ensuring that our team members have a safe work environment,” said Tim Lyons, general manager of OMU.
The APPA Safety Award of Excellence honors utilities with strong safety performance, determined by low incident rates and the overall effectiveness of their safety programs and workplace culture. More than 240 utilities participated in the 2025 awards program, with honors awarded at the diamond, platinum, and gold levels based on total worker-hours.
Incident rates are calculated using the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses alongside total worker-hours during the year, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
“This recognition reflects who we are at OMU: local people serving our community,” said Ashtin Warren, communications and public relations specialist. “Our commitment goes beyond the work we do each day. It’s about showing up for our neighbors, looking out for one another, and doing our part to keep Owensboro running. Safety is at the core of that commitment, and it’s what allows us to continue building a stronger, more resilient community together.”
The award highlights OMU’s continued focus on employee safety while maintaining reliable service and contributing to the overall well-being of the Owensboro community.
