A Sunday evening house fire in Daviess County resulted in the loss of 19 pets, according to the Daviess County Fire Department.
According to a post by DCFD, firefighters were dispatched at approximately 5:39 p.m. on April 5 to a reported structure fire on Graham Lane East. While en route, dispatchers advised crews that smoke was visible coming from the roof and that someone who opened the front door encountered heavy smoke inside. The homeowners were not at the residence at the time, but officials said 13 dogs and six cats were inside.
Authorities said that upon arrival, crews found a working fire and quickly deployed a hose line through the front entrance, extinguishing the bulk of the flames. A hydrant located across the street allowed firefighters to establish a water supply without delay.
Additional crews from Thruston-Philpot Fire Department and Yelvington Fire Department assisted with ventilation and conducted a search of the home for the animals. According to DCFD, all of the animals inside the residence were found deceased after succumbing to the fire.
Firefighters then conducted overhaul operations, pulling portions of the ceiling in multiple areas to extinguish remaining hot spots.
The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
