A man wanted on felony warrants was taken into custody Wednesday morning after allegedly pulling a knife during a struggle with deputies, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies went to a residence in the 1700 block of River Road around 6:55 a.m. April 15 to arrest a suspect on outstanding warrants. Authorities said the suspect fled out the back door after seeing deputies arrive and was later found hiding behind a tree.

When deputies approached, the suspect ran, leading to a brief foot pursuit. After being caught, he continued to resist arrest and fight with deputies, officials said. During the struggle, a deputy removed a knife clipped to the suspect’s pocket.

According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect then produced a second knife while deputies were attempting to take him into custody, creating what officials described as a substantial risk of serious physical harm or death. A deputy used an approved vascular neck restraint, causing the suspect to drop the knife before he was handcuffed.

The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Joseph Scott Preston of Owensboro, was taken to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital for evaluation and treatment of minor injuries before being lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center. One deputy was also treated for minor injuries and later returned to duty.

Preston faces charges including failure to appear, probation violation for a felony offense, two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, third-degree fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
