Martha Jean Hardesty, 83, of Owensboro, KY, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital with her loving family at her side. She was born on August 26, 1942, in Owensboro to the late George and Melvina Frakes Faith. Martha was a lifelong member of Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church, where her faith was a steady foundation throughout her life.
A proud Owensboro native, Martha graduated from Owensboro Catholic High School and Brescia College. She was known from an early age for her warm, friendly spirit—she truly never met a stranger—and that same kindness and strength carried her through every season of life.
Martha devoted her early years to raising her four children, keeping a busy and lively home filled with love, laughter, and more than a little chaos. She shared those children with Charlie Pickrell, who remained a dear friend as they were forever united in their love for their family. Later in life, she found her true partner and greatest love in her husband, Ronnie Hardesty. Together, they built a life grounded in friendship, laughter, and deep devotion. Ronnie was her best friend, her travel companion, her partner in every sense, and ultimately her devoted caretaker. The love and care he gave her, especially during her illness, cannot be put into words. He was her rock, her everything, and her family holds him close in their hearts as they navigate this loss together.
After raising her children, Martha began her career with the Daviess County Fiscal Court, where she made history as the county’s first Purchasing Agent. She was known as a hard worker who took pride in doing things the right way, earning the respect of her colleagues and community.
At home, Martha was the heart of every gathering. Though her house may have been the smallest, it was always the place everyone gathered for holidays —a tradition she held onto as long as she possibly could. That home was especially dear to her, as it was the very place where she was raised. It became a place where generations overlapped, where memories were layered over time, and where love was felt in every room. To her children and grandchildren, it was more than just a house—it was the center of family life, filled with laughter, tradition, and a deep sense of belonging.
She was an incredible cook, known for her homemade southern meals—meatloaf, pot roast, goulash—and especially her pies. Even in her weakened state, she recently made five pies for a family gathering, a testament to her determination and love for her family.
Martha found joy in life’s simple pleasures—sweets, a cold Coca-Cola, her cats, and time spent with the people she loved most. She had a special fondness for the beach, New Orleans, and trips to Texas to visit family. She and Ronnie shared many adventures together, especially on road trips and motorcycle rides, laughing along the way. Whether it was cheering at a NASCAR race, attending the rodeo, or enjoying a meal at Babe’s Famous Fried Chicken, those memories became treasured stories for the family. She also loved passing down traditions, like making her grandmother Melvina’s ice cream cake with the next generation.
As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Martha’s love was constant, intentional, and deeply felt. She adored her children—Hope, Robin, Holly, and Glenn—and took great pride in the lives they built and the families they raised. She welcomed Ronnie’s daughter, Kristen, with the same warmth, embracing her as her own.
She cherished her grandchildren—Eric, Logan, Chase, and Ty—taking time to build special, individual bonds with each of them. She never missed a birthday or holiday and found great joy in the traditions she created, always making sure they felt remembered and loved.
As her family grew, Martha embraced her role as a great-grandmother with the same devotion. Some of her most treasured days were spent at home with Gatlin and Bella, sharing simple joys—walks, time in the kitchen, and being together. She was deeply grateful that God allowed her the time to welcome Olive, Walker, and baby Ava—moments that meant more to her than words can express.
Martha also enjoyed her time creating ceramics, many of which have now become cherished keepsakes among her family—pieces that, much like her, will be lovingly remembered and gently argued over for years to come.
Above all, Martha will be remembered for her warmth, her strength, her sense of humor, and the way she made people feel welcome and loved. She built a life centered around family, faith, and tradition, and her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched.
Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Joseph Ronnie Hardesty; daughters, Hope Yager (Pat), Robin Pickrell, and Dr. Holly Pickrell (Van Franey); son, Glenn Pickrell (Tabitha); stepdaughter, Kristen Hardesty (Kevin Tolson); grandchildren, Eric Garner (Leah), Logan Garner, Chase Pickrell (Brookelyn), and Ty Pickrell; and great-grandchildren, Gatlin Garner, Bella Garner, Olive Garner, Walker Garner, and Ava Pickrell.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, with prayers at 6:00 p.m. at James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory.
