Dorothy Belle (Houston) Edgeworth, age 97, went home to be with the Lord on May 10, 2026.
Born on February 28, 1929 in the same farmhouse where her father was born at Brown’s Valley near Utica, KY.
She was the daughter of the late Stateler and Jessie (Baird) Houston.
Pre-deceased by her mother and father, her husband, Myron Edgeworth, Jr., her older sister Elizabeth who died at childbirth, her brothers Samuel Walker “Steve” Houston and John Randolph Houston, and her sister Shirley (Houston) Belcher.
Survived by her daughter, Harriet A. (Edgeworth) Sutton of Owensboro, her son Myron H. “Buz” Edgeworth (Mary) of Virginia Beach, VA; her five grandchildren Emily A. Crigger (Matthew), Amy E. Snyder (Robert), Andrew H. Edgeworth, Paul H. Sutton, Jr. (Lakyn), and William A. “Alex” Edgeworth; as well as five great-grandchildren: Aubrey Hester, Payslee Boling; Weston Sutton, Dawson Sutton and Ledger Sutton; and her surviving nieces (5) and nephews (2), and many great-nephews and great-nieces.
She was a graduate of Western Kentucky University with Bachelor’s degree in Education; minor in Psychology; member of Beta Omega Chi Sorority; and later obtained her Master’s degree in Education from Western Kentucky University. She was also an accomplished pianist.
Married to the love of her life, dance partner and U.S. Marine, Myron “Monty” Edgeworth on December 7, 1951. Both were re-baptized at Third Baptist Church in Owensboro to make their professions of faith together. They were married almost 38 years, until he went home to be with the Lord on August 31, 1989.
After serving as an elementary and middle school teacher in Owensboro/Daviess County for 33 1/3 years, she retired in 1984. As an educator, she instilled the importance of a good education in each of her children, always expected the best efforts from her children, grandchildren and students, and especially enjoyed sharing reading programs with her grandchildren and sharing her World Book Encyclopedias with them to help with research projects. She also stressed the importance of faith and getting involved in a local church community. Her children remember how she always took them to Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and youth group.
In her post-retirement years, she enjoyed dividing her time between Owensboro and St. Augustine Beach, Florida where she developed lasting friendships with other “snow-birds” such as dear friends Mary Ray and Sally Tillson. When she was in town, these three “Golden Girls” would gather almost every evening in their high-top seats on her balcony in time to catch the sunset and good conversation. She loved the warmer climate and positive, loving friendships she developed in Florida.
A few years ago, as she entered her 90’s, she penned some reflections on her life, which closed with the following sentence: “I am thankful for family and our time together.” Her family echoes that sentiment, especially the many years they were blessed to have Mom-Dot (also called “Dottie Belle”) here to enjoy life’s blessings and joys alongside us.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at Third Baptist Church, Owensboro, KY, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the church on Saturday. Burial will follow the service at Rosehill Cemetery.
