The Owensboro Symphony will bring back one of the community’s longest-running summer traditions next month with the 39th annual Concert on the Lawn at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
The free concert, presented by U.S. Bank, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, on the front lawn of the college. Guests may begin setting up for picnics at 5:30 p.m.
This year’s concert will feature music from classic films and Broadway productions, including selections from The Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast.
Music Director and Conductor Troy Quinn said the program is designed to appeal to audiences of all ages.
“This concert celebrates some of the most iconic music ever written for film and the stage,” Quinn said. “From thrilling overtures from The Phantom of the Opera and West Side Story to beloved favorites like Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast, audiences will be swept away by the unforgettable melodies that have inspired generations.”
The annual event has served as an end-of-summer tradition for many families, combining live music with an evening of picnics and community fellowship on the Kentucky Wesleyan campus.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets, though several local food trucks will also be on site. Those who prefer a reserved setup can purchase a table with eight chairs and a Moonlite dinner for eight for $440 or reserve a table with chairs only for $200.
Patrons who reserve tables are also invited to take part in the annual table decorating contest, which will feature a Hollywood Soundtracks theme this year.
Table reservations must be made in advance by calling 270-684-0661 or visiting OwensboroSymphony.org.
