Residents of Owensboro and the surrounding area have a chance to show they are united this Saturday with a unique singing event hosted by Cromwell Media.
At noon, all seven Cromwell radio stations will begin to play the 2-minute version of My Old Kentucky Home. Everyone is encouraged to sing along or play an instrument — and post a video of themselves doing so on social media.
All the videos that use the hashtags #owensborosings and #cromwellmedia will be compiled, then put into a montage video that is released later next week.
The idea originated with Jordan Roos, a DJ at 97X, after he saw communities across the globe doing similar videos.
“I thought we could easily do that here in Owensboro,” he said. “I got the ball rolling last week. I started brainstorming with the team here at Cromwell Media. On Monday we fired it off, and it has been such a great reception from the community.”
Roos said they chose My Old Kentucky Home because it’s a song people are familiar with, and it seemed like the perfect fit for the circumstance.
“The whole point of this is to bring unity and a sense of community to everybody,” he said. “Since we can’t physically be next to each other, we can all sit around at noon Saturday and sing My Old Kentucky Home together.”
He said they’ve already gotten a positive response — local musicians, Mayor Tom Watson, Owensboro Police Department, and St. Benedict’s Homeless Shelter have all said they would be participating.
Whether it’s real singing, lip syncing, playing an instrument or dancing, Roos said everyone is encouraged to participate.
The song will be broadcast on the following stations: 92.9, 94.7, 97.1, 98.7, 100.5, 102.7 and 105.7.
Here are the lyrics they’ll be using:
The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home,
Tis summer, the loved ones are gay;
The corn-top’s ripe and the meadow’s in the bloom
While the birds make music all the day.
The young folks roll on the little cabin floor
All merry, all happy and bright;
By ‘n by hard times comes a knocking at the door
Then my old Kentucky home, Good-night!
Chorus:
Weep no more my lady.
Oh! Weep no more today!
We will sing one song
For the old Kentucky home
For the old Kentucky home, far away.
