County Commissioners are expected to appoint five individuals to serve on the Confederate Monument Relocation Committee during today’s Fiscal Court meeting. The decision to have the statue removed from the courthouse lawn and subsequently form a committee to decide its new placement was unanimously made on Aug. 6.
The five-person committee was hand-selected by Daviess County Fiscal Court’s three commissioners and Judge-Executive Al Mattingly. They will have six months to make a recommendation for the statue’s relocation.
If all appointments are approved, the committee will be led by Aloma Dew, who was chosen by Mattingly to serve as board chair. Mattingly also selected Wesley Acton to serve as a committee member. Other appointees selected were Kenny Bar (by Commissioner George Wathen), Anne Damron (by Commissioner Charlie Castlen) and Tim Kline (by Commissioner Mike Koger).
The statue is currently located on the southwest corner of the Daviess County Courthouse lawn and will not be moved until the committee agrees on a new location that is approved by Fiscal Court.
