The Daviess County Democratic Party will be hosting a drive-thru donation event Saturday to collect food and other non-perishable items that will directly benefit homeless veterans across the community.
Donations can be dropped off Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon at 233 Williamsburg Square.
Democratic party chair Donna Haynes said this event was created because the COVID-19 pandemic had resulted in a lack of monetary donations being made over the last few months.
“We have always taken donations for veterans. We’ve always had a box for donations down at the Democratic headquarters,” Haynes said. “With COVID-19, there’s nothing in the box. This event will allow people to feel safe. We encourage everyone to wear masks, and you don’t have to get out of your car.”
The items collected will be delivered to the Veterans Clinic for distribution. The Veterans Clinic serves area veterans, many of whom are homeless and in need of both food and everyday items.
Haynes said she’d spoken with a number of people throughout the regional who were planning to make donations. Even with that kind of support, Haynes said it would be difficult to garner enough donations for every homeless veteran in the area.
“We probably won’t be able to help nearly enough veterans, but this won’t be our only [event],” she said. “If we have a good turnout, we’ll probably do another one in the near future.”
