This is a story in a series on local high school athletes signing to continue their athletic and academic careers at the next level.

Apollo senior Mykel Whitney, Jr. is taking his talents to the University of Pikeville after leading the Eagles in interceptions in 2020.

Whitney pulled down three picks for 63 yards in John Edge’s first year at the helm of the Eagles. Pikeville starts its 2020 season Feb. 12 against Lindsey Wilson in Columbia.

How does it feel to finally know where you’re going to attend next year and to make it official?

It feels really good. I feel less stressed and more relaxed. I’m more focused on what I’m going to study to get the type of career I want after college. It seems bits and pieces of my life’s puzzle are coming together and it feels like I’ve got a plan.

Why did you choose the school you did?

I chose the University of Pikeville because of the environment it presented. The environment gave me a spark. The coaches were super organized. I also liked how the coaches put a focus on education being first before the sport. The weather, people, and the school seemed pretty relaxed and cool in Pikeville. It’s a small town and school, but it means it will provide me the atmosphere to focus more on my studies. I also like how the school invests in its players. I also wanted to go somewhere where a lot of people wouldn’t necessarily think to attend and Pikeville is a place that fits what I was looking for in a school.

What stood out about the program and the coaches?

The coaches put emphasis on school first before the sport. They are going to help make sure I study and attend classes before I get out on the field. They want to make sure the transition from high school to college is as smooth as possible. If I need a tutor, then they will make sure I get a tutor. But I also like how I’ll get playing time during my freshman year. Everyone gets a shot on the field if they can prove themselves.

What are you going to study?

I’m going to study business and science (possibly computer science).

What are you going to miss about your team and school?

I’m going to miss the memories and laughs. I’m going to miss hanging out in the locker room with my friends and teammates. I will also miss playing on the field and even hanging out on the sidelines. I’m definitely going to miss my friends in general. I’ve known some of them since elementary and middle school.
