The Owensboro Fire Department is investigating a fire that occurred Friday afternoon in one unit of an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Carter Road.

The call came in around 5 p.m. and when units arrived there was heavy fire and smoke coming out of the front door, according to OFD Captain Trey Davidson. He said the first engine quickly knocked down the fire, saving the other five units from sustaining damage.

Davidson said OFD doesn’t know what caused the fire yet and they are still investigating.

He said American Red Cross is coming to help those who will be displaced from their home for now.

Davidson said the affected unit would likely have to be gutted due to smoke, fire and water damage throughout, but it could be salvaged because the other five units in the apartment complex were ok.

AMR ambulance and Owensboro Police Department also responded to the scene.
