In reviewing the two major August events hosted in Owensboro, city officials said the Air Show was successful but the HydroFair fell short of what attendees were expecting. Still, the events drew an estimated 70,000+ attendees and brought a needed boost to the economy.

Public Events Director Tim Ross said spectators were excited for the HydroFair, but he partially believes that the weather and delays were a reason for the letdown and smaller-than-expected turnout.

“It still was a little bit less than what we anticipated it to be, so based on what the costs are to do that style event, it wasn’t as strong as I was hoping it would be,” Ross said.

The first day of HydroFair races was filled with delays due to debris before it was eventually decided to postpone everything to the final day. Overnight rain caused more delays the next day but the event was finally able to wrap up — though the crowd had thinned significantly.

When it came to the Air Show, Ross said it was nice to recognize veterans in town and connect them with active-duty military members.

In reflection of the two weekends, Ross said they collected more than $100,000 in sponsor cash revenue and another $100,000 in Convention Center income. Also, nine of the hotels in town were sold out.

According to Ross, the Air Show’s net cost — which excludes parking revenues, food and beverage, and the like — was around $185,000, which is a $50,000 increase from when Blue Angels came last time. With the same exclusions, the HydroFair was net cost $150,000.

Mayor Pro Tem Larry Maglinger said that both events were really positive for the economy and helped Visit Owensboro as they hit a record occupancy since 2012.

Ross said that it would be impossible to hold the events without the aid of the Public Works, Fire and Police departments for their involvement on both events.
