Harvest Baptist is hosting a unique drive-thru event this weekend, as they present The Living Christmas Story: More Than Just a Manger. The event — set for 6-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday — will include a guided narration along with live characters and animals.
Officials said The Living Christmas Story will be best experienced with a smartphone. There is no cost for this event. Harvest Baptist is located at 4430 Old Calhoun Road.
Harvest Baptist Pastor Greg Dowdy said viewers will be guided through a total of eight scenes. The use of a smartphone will allow viewers to access the audio narration for each scene (the church will provide help for those who do not have a smartphone). He said live characters and animals “will make the events surrounding the birth of Christ come alive.”
“Our church family has invested hundreds of man-hours in building scenes and props, creating costumes, and the actual performance during the presentation,” Dowdy said.
This is the first year Harvest Baptist is putting on the event. Dowdy said while serving in a church in West Virginia, his family was privileged to help with this project for several years — so they brought it to Owensboro.
“While we have contemplated doing this for the last couple of years, we sensed an overwhelming desire to help our community with a distraction from the stress of our world over the last two years,” Dowdy said. “The birth of the Messiah has brought hope to the world for literally thousands of years. Our prayer is that this presentation will reignite that hope for our community, especially after what we have seen with the recent storms and tornadoes.”
