It was the first game of 2022 for KWC Women’s Basketball, and they kept their winning ways going as they took down the Ohio Dominican Panthers by a score of 71-52 on Saturday afternoon.
With the win Wesleyan moves to 8-4 (5-1 G-MAC) while ODU drops to 1-10 (1-4 G-MAC).
Ohio Dominican started off hot, going up 10-2 on Wesleyan just three minutes into the game. Unfazed, KWC went on a 10-0 run capped off by a Corina Conley layup to take the lead at 12-10. At the en of the opening quarter Wesleyan held a slight lead at 16-14.
With 7:17 left in the second quarter, ODU took what would be their final lead of the game, going up 20-18 on a jumper in the paint. A Reeva Hammelman three-pointer sparked an 8-0 run over the next two minutes that saw KWC take a 26-20 lead. The teams traded buckets the rest of the frame and Wesleyan held a slight 36-32 lead heading into the locker rooms.
Wesleyan separated themselves in the third quarter, outscoring ODU 22-10 in the frame. Up by just seven halfway through the third, KWC used four straight points from Cali Nolot to spark an 11-2 run to close the quarter. Wesleyan led 58-42 with just 10 minutes remaining.
Jordyn Barga and Tahlia Walton scored all but two of Wesleyan’s 13 points in the fourth quarter and the Panthers cruised to the 19-point victory.
Walton led the way with 22 points, followed by Nolot’s 13 and Bargas’11. Walton finished with nine rebounds and Barga led the way with four assists.
Wesleyan shot an impressive 27-50 (54%) for the game and 7-19 (36.8%) from three. KWC held Ohio Dominican to just 19-52 (36.5%) from the floor and 7-27 (25.9%) from behind the arc.
Kentucky Wesleyan dominated in points in the paint, outscoring ODU 40-16 in that category.
KWC will be back in action on Monday when they host the Cedarville Yellowjackets at 5:30 p.m. at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
