The CareNet Reindeer Run is returning to downtown Owensboro for its fourth year on Dec. 1. Runners and walkers are invited to participate in this festive 5k run that starts and ends at the Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown Owensboro/Waterfront.

Lisa Merritt, community relations coordinator for CareNet, said they see everyone from serious runners to casual walkers at the event.

“We even have mothers pushing strollers or pulling wagons during the run,” she said. “It’s an event for everyone.”

Merritt said the CareNet team encourages participants to dress in Christmas attire or their best ugly Christmas sweater.

“In the past people have worn jingle bells, Christmas lights and other fun accessories,” she said. “We really encourage families and groups to participate and make it fun.”

After the run there will be free snacks, coffee and hot chocolate.

Medals will be given to the top overall male and female finishers. First and second place male and female division finishers will also get medals and the best dressed child and adult will win gift cards.

“It helps people get into the Christmas spirit,” Merritt said. “This year there are some other events going on all on the same day — Breakfast with Santa at the Convention Center, the Holiday Stroll — the entire day is dedicated to getting people into the Christmas spirit.”

Registration is $25 per person until Nov. 28 with family discounts being offered for every additional person. Family discounts will not be available on race day. Every participant receives a long sleeve T-shirt.

All proceeds go back to CareNet which provides free pregnancy tests, counseling, ultrasounds and much more. For more information on CareNet or the Reindeer Run call 270-685-5077.
