Beginning at 11:30 a.m., the entire Bible will be read in 20 minutes followed by an hour of prayer, song and testimony on the Daviess County Courthouse lawn.

Millions will join together in spirit Thursday for the National Day of Prayer. In Owensboro, community members will gather around the Daviess County Courthouse flagpole to participate in this national event. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., the entire Bible will be read in 20 minutes followed by an hour of prayer, song and testimony on the courthouse lawn.

“We are urged to pray. He tells us to pray,” said Jo Barron, a committee member who has been involved with the Owensboro National Day of Prayer event now for 25 years. “When you pray God’s will be done collectively — things happen, prayers are answered.”

Nationwide, the event has been held since April 17, 1952, when President Harry Truman signed a bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer into law in the United States.

“I’ve served on many committees and organizations throughout the years and this is my absolute favorite,” Barren said. “What I love so much about the National Day of Prayer is that across all 50 states there will be more than 50,000 prayer services like that which will be held at the Courthouse lawn here in Owensboro. When we come together there will be people of all walks of life, all ages.”

Those desiring to participate can pick up their starting point of scripture as early as 10:30 that morning, or can attend virtually by calling in beforehand to participate and receive their starting point of scripture. Following the reading of the Bible, the hour of prayer will begin at 12 noon and this year will be live streamed via their Facebook page.

“We encourage people to bring their families, their co-workers, bring a friend,” Barron said. “Praying always puts us in the proper relationship with God. He is the one true God.”

The event will be held rain or shine and, with thunderstorms likely on Thursday, participants are encouraged to bring an umbrella. If it rains participants will go inside the courthouse

“It’s such a tremendous witness as people drive by, even in the rain, seeing the umbrellas and people reading the Bible in the rain,” Barron said. “These people’s commitment to the privilege of prayer is such a testament.”
