The City of Whitesville will hold its 12th annual “Fireworks in the Park” celebration on Friday, June 28. The event will take place at Whitesville City Park on Highway 54 and will include food vendors, live music and, of course, fireworks.
Whitesville Mayor Patsy Mayfield said the annual event is free to the public and, even more, all the funding for the fireworks show was paid for by local businesses.
“It doesn’t cost the taxpayers anything — the City of Whitesville isn’t out any money,” Mayfield said. “We send letters to local businesses and collect that money beforehand. The amount we raise goes straight toward the fireworks.”
Owensboro resident Stuart Snow has handled the fireworks for each of the 12 years Whitesville has hosted the event, Mayfield said. If inclement weather falls on Friday’s event, a rain-date has been scheduled for Saturday, June 29.
The event begins at 5 p.m. with food vendors opening up shop to the public. Live music will kick off at 6 p.m., where two local bands will perform. The fireworks will begin around 9 p.m., Mayfield said.
Local schools will be holding fundraisers too, Mayfield said, with Whitesville Trinity High School cooking hamburgers to raise money for a baseball field and Whitesville Elementary selling lighted toys, snow cones and popcorn for a fundraiser of its own. Homemade ice cream, lemonade, funnel cakes and barbequed pork will also be served at the event.
“The Green River Firefighters Honor Guard will present their flag and colors and [a local resident] will sing ‘The Star Spangled Banner,’” Mayfield said. “We’ve always had a great turnout for this event, and we expect a big crowd this year too.”
