Registration is now open for the 3rd Annual Girls Aviation & Aerospace Day Camp for young women ages 7-16. This event, which occurs at the Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport, and in conjunction with the Ninety-Nines Organization for Women Pilots-Bluegrass Chapter, will take place Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. until noon.

“The camp is developed to create awareness of the opportunity young women have in aviation and aerospace technology and inspire these young women to pursue their aviation dreams,” said Lauren Dalzell Settles, program director and founder.

Stations will include women in aviation history, mechanic, how airplanes fly, getting into the airplane and seeing the controls, women air traffic control, airplane crafts and women commercial pilots.

“This is the 3rd year for this event and I’m excited to see how many girls come back from previous years as well as new attendees,” Settles said. “I love to see the excitement in their eyes when they get to see, touch and get into airplanes, which is something not many get the chance to do.”

The previous two years have brought interest to aviation for young girls, growing from 99 to 120 attendees in those two years, and Settles, who earned her pilot’s license in 2017, is inspired by the attendees.

“Supplementing their growing imagination is important at this age and I’m glad I get a chance to be a part of that and hope this inspires them to pursue their dreams, whatever they may be,” Settles said.

The Young Aviator attendance price is $15 a person, which includes materials, t-shirt, goodie bag and a pizza lunch. In addition, each girl gets the chance to earn a scholarship to pursue their aviation dreams.

Girl Scouts will be able to earn their aviation badge by attending this camp.
