UPDATE – The Howl-O-Ween event at the Castlen Dog Park has been moved to the Owensboro Parks and Recreation Administration Center at 1530 McJohnson Avenue due to rain.

The Owensboro Dog Park Association, the group responsible for bringing the dog park to fruition, is partnering with the Owensboro Parks Department to host its first Howl-O-Ween at Castlen Dog Park on Oct. 26.

The event, hosted by Owensboro Parks and Recreation, Castlen Realtors, Pampered Paws, Atmos Energy, Owensboro Eye Care and TD’s Tuff Decisions will include Real Hacienda and The Spot Coffee and Finery food trucks, inflatables by Wild Child, face painting, a DJ, trick-or-treating for dogs and several contests. Demo classes by Pure Barre and Paws Town will also take place.

Vendors will be set up around the fenced in park to hand out treats to dogs in costume as well as share information about their businesses.

Castlen Dog Park volunteer Pattie Martin said that the event is a great opportunity for the community to come together.

“Our whole mission is to have a community and to sponsor events,” Martin said.

Martin said that she takes her dog to the dog park regularly since its opening and routinely sees the same people who are making the park part of their routine. She spoke with one dog owner who brings his dog in the morning and then the owner goes to dialysis for six hours after, leaving the dog at home during that time.

“It’s so wonderful that he has a place to come safely and have that moment,” Martin said. “Owners have the freedom to let their pets off their leashes — even if the pet just lays next to them.”

She said that people are also coming after work after dogs have been home all day and that reception to the park for socialization has been positive. The dog park community has also been cleaning up after their dogs, something that those opposed to the dog park voiced as a concern, Martin said.

The Howl-O-Ween event will be held Oct. 26 from 4-6 p.m. at Legion Park, which is located at 3047 Legion Park Drive. Call 270-687-8700 for more details.

Martin said that more fundraising events for the park are in the planning stages and for more information, stay updated on the Castlen Dog Park Facebook page.
