Owensboro Symphony Orchestra will open their season Oct. 26 with an “epic” program, according to music director Troy Quinn.

The opening concert, according to Quinn, includes bold selections set in ancient Greece and Rome and moves to contemporary pieces from “Game of Thrones,” the Emmy-award winning HBO show.

Two pieces by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, “Pines of Rome” and “Fountains of Rome,” are pieces that Quinn said are “bucket list” pieces for many conductors.

“The audience will hear the grandest ending in all of music,” Quinn said. “It will be a bombastic and powerful concert.”

In his third season with the Owensboro Symphony, Quinn said that although people would think it gets easier to choose the season, the vast array of music and creative programming available actually makes it difficult.

Quinn, who has been conducting for 10 years, said that what he most enjoys about putting the season together for Owensboro is pairing the familiar with the unfamiliar, and he knows the audience now expects a sensory, all-in-one-show, which the Owensboro Symphony provides through technology and musician and conductor interactions with the audience.

Quinn is already working to program the 2020-21 season for the Owensboro Symphony, thanks to his contract being extended for an additional three years.

“I have my pulse on national trends and am balancing what will work with Owensboro — what will be appealing to our community,” Quinn said.

He said that he is most excited to get on stage Oct. 26 and make music with his colleagues, adding that it is a privilege to have the “best seat in the house.”

“It’s a joy to present this type of music,” Quinn said. “The energy and excitement [of the concertgoers] is palatable and that is so rare.”

The rest of the season will include the always-popular holiday concert, Home for the Holidays, on Dec. 14; Bond…James Bond on Feb. 1; the Music of Elton John with pianist and vocalist Michael Cavanaugh on March 7; and the Season Finale on April 18 with Concertmaster Ji-Woon Jung as the featured soloist.

Tickets are on sale now for the 2019-20 season and can be purchased at www.theoso.com or by calling 270-684-0661.

All Owensboro Symphony concerts are in Cannon Hall at the RiverPark Center, 101 Daviess St., and begin at 7 p.m.
