The Daviess County Public Library will host its StoryWalk ribbon-cutting Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Moreland Park where they will unveil their latest community outreach program and the community is invited to attend.

Through a $6,850 grant from Owensboro Health, the Daviess County Public Library created an installation of StoryWalk, a literacy and physical activity tool that engages community members in reading children’s books in unique environments. Through a series of signs featuring sequential spreads from a children’s picture book, readers follow the story by walking.

“So many families utilize the parks within our community. It seemed like a natural fit to install a StoryWalk® at one of the city’s busiest parks,” said Shannon Sandefur, DCPL community engagement manager.“We hope that those who follow along with the StoryWalk will be inspired to read more and to visit the Library and learn more about the different products and services that we offer.”

Library staff chose the first story in the series of books, but patrons of the library are encouraged to send in suggestions for books in the future. Stories will rotate every six weeks.

The City of Owensboro, also volunteered its services to help with the installation of the StoryWalk.

“Our goal with installing the new StoryWalk is to reach more customers outside of the walls of the library,” said Sandefur.
