Attendees for opening night of the “Dazzling Daylilies Celebration” were greeted with paintings as they made their way into the Western Kentucky Botanical Gardens to see the daylilies on Saturday.

The celebration began with the Owensboro Art Guild’s Plein Air event, which was done in partnership with WKBG. This event was the first of its kind and complemented the evening’s program well, said Susie Tyler, director of the Botanical Garden.

“The people are coming gradually and that’s a way to handle the way we are attempting to handle the guidelines, so we’re very pleased,” Tyler said. “The jazz music is wonderful, and the art is out of this world.”

The 11th annual event was renamed this year to adapt to COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings. Dozens of visitors showed up Saturday to experience the daylilies, artwork, Owensboro Symphony’s Jazz Trio at the gazebo and hot air balloons.

WKBG continues the celebration with a Father’s Day brunch special Sunday.

Selma Wiesenberg, director of Owensboro Art Guild, said she hoped the partnership attracted visitors to the botanical garden.
