The fifth annual Bourbon & Bluegrass Century Ride has been cancelled. The event was scheduled for Aug. 1 at O.Z. Tyler Distillery.

Becky Martin, president of Bicycle Owensboro, said it was a prudent thing to do considering that the Century Ride has in the past attracted more 500 participants from about 15 different states.

“We felt that with the coronavirus it wasn’t appropriate to encourage a mass gathering,” Martin said. “We’re sorry to cancel it, but we just feel it’s prudent and hopefully we’ll be back next year.”

Officials were hopeful in early May that the ride could still happen on a smaller scale. However, Martin said with COVID-19 lingering and no end in sight, officials felt it was better to be safe than sorry by pulling the plug on the 2020 event.

“People held off  to see what was going to happen, so we didn’t have that many people registered,”  Martin said. “They have the option of having a refund minus some fees or donating their registration fee to Dream Riders.”

The century ride is a charity event hosted by Bicycle Owensboro in support of Dream Riders of Kentucky, which is a nonprofit that provides equine-assisted activities and therapies to individuals of all ages with disabilities.
