The Grant G. Talbott III Memorial Run — Owensboro Community and Technical College’s 33rd annual road race — will be held virtually this year. Participants may choose their own path and day to run or walk the 5K distance from Nov. 5-8, and they will log their time online.

All proceeds go to support OCTC students.

“We missed our initial date due to COVID restriction, and our back-up dates, too,” said Mike Rodgers, Chief Resource Development Officer for OCTC. “Our team wanted to try to host the event to continue to support students and to keep up the tradition of this race.”

All preregistered participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Shirts are not guaranteed for late registrants. The entry fee is $30, or $10 for OCTC students.

In addition, participants may opt to purchase a finishers medal for an additional $10. The medal features the OCTC Pathfinder mascot and a seasonal turkey with masks as a nod to current health restrictions.

“Some of our team members participate in virtual races and they were a great help in organizing and adding some of the fun features, like the medals and race bibs,” Rodgers said. “We’ve tried to get folks from other states to join in on the fun. It’s a great cause, particularly during this health crisis, we see more students that need help with basic needs.”

Age group awards will be virtual and posted to social media. Participants may opt to log in to an MS Teams page to see if others are running simultaneously. Participants are encouraged to post photos to social media and use #octc5k.

Local participants may pick up their shirts Nov. 2-4 from 11-1:30 p.m. at OCTC’s Main Campus (Administration Building-Office of Resource Development, 4800 New Hartford Rd., Owensboro).

All Healthy at OCTC protocols will be in place, with masks and social distancing required.

The race is named in honor of Grant G. “GG” Talbott. Talbott served as a counselor and mentor at OCTC for 10 years after retiring from Owensboro High School. He was a friend and mentor to many during his lifelong commitment to education. Talbott coordinated the road race from 1998-2007.
