On Tuesday, the Care Net Reindeer Run Facebook page posted that “in light of Governor Beshear’s recent Coronavirus restrictions, the City of Owensboro will not be issuing the necessary permits for us to host the in-person 5k Reindeer Run/Walk on December 5th.  We are transitioning to a virtual event and would appreciate your patience as we shift gears… Stay tuned!”

Care Net has celebrated a successful year in 2020. After opening a new location last month, they are gearing up for their annual Care Net Reindeer Run 5K sponsored by American Patriot Getaways on Dec. 5. With many races going virtual, this 5K will be one of the first held in-person in Owensboro this year.

While the event might look a little different to ensure all health and safety guidelines are met, Community Relations Coordinator Lisa Merritt is thankful to be able to hold the race in person.

“We have been working hard to lay out a plan,” Merritt said. “Delivering a safe event is going to require everyone’s help and cooperation.”

A few changes to the layout of events include a wave start to ensure proper social distancing, and the requirement of a mask both before and after the race.

In the midst of all the festivities, Merritt wants to make sure the community also recognizes that the event is for a good cause. All proceeds from the Reindeer Run go toward Care Net’s operational expenses. Services include free and confidential pregnancy tests, ultrasounds and STD testing and treatment.

“We rely on community fundraisers to keep our services free and our doors open to care for clients,” she said. “There is a real need in our community for the services we provide, and we want to continue to meet that need, now and in the future.”

They also offer education and material resources. All services are provided free of charge and are made possible though the contribution of generous community partners including fundraisers like this one.

The Reindeer Run welcomes runners and walkers of all ages. The event urges participants to dress in their most festive Christmas attire such as ugly sweaters, Santa hats, bells, or fun socks.

The Reindeer Run/Walk registration fee includes a long-sleeve T-shirt and entry for door prize drawings. Outside of awards for top two best times in each age division, awards include Best Face Mask and Best Dressed for both adult and child.

“We are pleased that there is much excitement about our physical race, and we are hoping to kick off the Christmas season with some much needed joy,” Merritt said.

Registration for the event is now open. Drive-thru packet pickup will be available on Dec. 4 from 10 a.m.–7 p.m. at Care Net Owensboro, 425 East 18th St.
