When Roxie Pickrell died in November 2019 after being diagnosed with a brain tumor just weeks prior, her parents Cathy and Jason wanted to make sure her spirit remained alive in the Owensboro community.

Since Roxie’s death, several events have been held in her memory, including a Boston Butt cook led by Patrick Franey of the Owensboro Fire Department, where Jason works.

This year, the Pickrells have planned to hold the inaugural Run for Foxy Roxie — an event that Cathy said will be a “solid, well-run and organized” 5k race on July 24 at Moreland Park.

The race is currently sponsored by Baird – The Settle Group; Elite Lawncare; Chris Hoskins Insurance; Niko’s Bakery; Liberty Financial; Allergy and Asthma Specialists; and AspYre.

Rise Up and Run will time the event, and walkers are also encouraged. Awards will be given for top male and female runners and the top three places in age categories.

“There is also a spirit award that will be given to the person dressed in the best ‘Foxy Roxie’ attire,” Cathy said.

The awards are also important as they are being made by two local businesses, Rough River Metal and Small Batch Woodworks.

Cathy said she chose a 5k as an event to remember Roxie because they are “high-energy, exciting and versatile.”

“I thought a 5k would be perfect,” Cathy said. “I want to see Owensboro all together in one place wearing Roxie T-shirts, fox attire and having fun because of her.”

All proceeds from the event will support Boulware Mission, as Cathy and her partner Phillip Page are participating in Dancing with Our Stars this year.

“I want those hosting to realize their donation is going to a great cause, an organization that provides a necessary service to our community,” she said. “In the future proceeds will always stay local and be given to a nonprofit. I want this race to feel like home.”

The Pickrells said that there are no words for the amount of support they have received.

“It has truly made all the difference,” she said.
