The 5th annual “Take a Kid Outdoors Day” will give children ages 8-17 a chance to explore and gain skills in numerous activities ranging from intro courses for firearms and archery to tracking and trapping.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Aug. 28 at the Daviess County Gun Club. The Daviess County Conservation District is partnering with several community organizations to host the event.

Children call also learn about ATV safety or identifying snakes and other reptiles. Additional stations include a laser game sponsored by Ducks Unlimited, a casting and reeling booth, a search and rescue station, and animal traps and furs.

“We want to spread awareness and introduce kids to what the outdoors has to offer,” said Emily Murphy with the conservation district. “It’s an excellent opportunity for kids to get out and explore the great outdoors while gaining valuable skills and knowledge from experienced individuals at each station.”

The event will also feature activities for younger children. Parents and guardians of participants are encouraged to join their children at the event, and lunch will be available to all in attendance.

The partnering organizations also sponsor a longstanding fishing event.

“Our first event was a Kids’ Outdoor’s Adventure fishing event; we got together and brainstormed and decided we wanted to do more,” Murphy said. “We used to sponsor only one event per year, and now we’re offering three or more. We also have a Take a Kid Camping event scheduled for October.”

Murphy said that the event always has several “repeat customers,” especially youth from the city where nature isn’t as readily accessible.

“Campers come from the city and other surrounding areas,” she said. “They don’t get to experience these types of things frequently, and it’s exciting to see them explore.”
