The RiverPark Center will host the inaugural Furst Wurst Brat-N-Beer-Lympics from 3-8 p.m. on Oct. 17. The atypical obstacle course allows participants to navigate challenges inside the building and finish with beers and bratwursts at the BB&T Plaza.
The event is RPC’s take on Oktoberfest and features live music and other food to accompany the “Olympic” events. The obstacle course is jam-packed with army crawling up the grand staircase, rock-paper-scissors, hula hoops, yodeling with a pickle, and many more silly activities.
“I was seeing some posts of other people doing Oktoberfest things, so we decided to do our own take on the celebrations,” said director of event services Jaynan Day-Wheeler, who initially pitched the idea. “I saw an image of a brat character drinking beer, and ideas just grew from there.”
In the spirit of Oktoberfest, there will be complimentary “hydration stations” between events where participants can grab a beer or rehydrate with water. Some of the obstacles test physical ability, while others test knowledge in the form of quiz questions.
The event also features prizes awarded to contestants on a podium — much like the Olympics. The cost to participate is $20, and T-shirts with the brat character on them are available for $5. The patio is open to the public at no cost and features a cash bar.
“This is a day for everyone to come relax, have a little fun, get silly, and enjoy yourself,” said RPC Executive Director Rich Jorn. “Have some brats and celebrate our version of Oktoberfest with a theatrical flair because that’s what we do down here.”

“This will likely be the ‘wurst’ Olympics ever,” Wheeler said. “There won’t be any real winners, but there will for sure be a lot of ‘wieners.’”
