The Pub on Second is hosting their first “Pups & Pints” event from 6-8 p.m. tonight on their patio, with goals of both raising money for Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky and helping pets find homes.

SparKy representatives will be in attendance with rescue dogs up for adoption. Ten percent of all sales will be donated to SparKy to further their mission.

“It’s an organization we’ve all always appreciated,” The Pub partner Bill Brown said. “We wanted to be able to help raise some money for them because they’re transitioning into their new space, and also helped to get some pets adopted.”

This will be the first event of its kind at The Pub, located at 116 W. 2nd St. All dogs must be on a leash, friendly and stay under the control of their owner.

Brown said they hope to keep the event going every two weeks going forward.

“They’ve done it in other cities and different places,” Brown said. “I’ve been keeping an eye on it and thought now was a good time since the weather has gotten a little bit cooler. Our plan is going to be to do it every two weeks, until the weather gets to where it’s not feasible.”

SparKy recently found a permanent location. The no-kill animal rescue generally relies on foster homes but is transitioning to provide their own animal housing at 1004 E. 18th St.

The new facility will primarily house puppies in their Sheltered Start program, which offers unaltered female dogs and their litter temporary housing. The litter is then fixed and put up for adoption while the mother is spayed and returned home.

SparKy provides all rescues with the necessary vaccines and ensures that their maintenance and emergency medical needs are met. They also install microchips and ensure that all of them are spayed or neutered.

No-kill shelters such as SparKy will only euthanize an animal if a veterinarian recommends it due to illness beyond providing the animal a good quality of life or due to severe behavior issues that pose a risk to humans or other animals.
