The 7th Annual Reindeer Run/Walk 5K presented by Care Net Owensboro will return to the riverfront on Dec. 4, with activities for the whole family.

Lisa Merritt, Care Net Relations Coordinator, sayid she is thankful to see the event take place in person. Due to COVID, last year the 5K race was held virtually.

“I am most excited about seeing our runners and walkers in person at the downtown event this year. Over the years, many have become loyal Reindeer runners,” Merritt said.

The Reindeer Dash is back for its second year, allowing young runners and walkers a chance to participate in the festivities without having to complete the full 5K course. The dash is a straight shot from a starting line to the finish line along the main event area of the riverfront.

“We love seeing the littles ages 7 and under run to the finish line with those big smiles on their faces,” Merritt said.

All young runners will receive a runner’s bib and a winner’s medal at the finish line. The Reindeer Dash has a separate entry fee of $7 and starting time is 8 a.m.

The full race will be a timed event for the purposes of awarding winner divisions. Awards include top finishers in each age group, best costume, and overall male and female finisher. Participants are encouraged to come dressed in Christmas attire.

New this year will be a visit from Santa with Believe OBKY.

“Visit with Santa, enjoy hot chocolate, and win door prizes as we kick off the Christmas season. Entry fee includes a long sleeve T-shirt and entry for door prize drawings — registration discounts are available for children 17 and under,” the event site reads.

The Reindeer Run/Walk 5K is one of the main fundraisers for Care Net each year. The local nonprofit provides services to expectant mothers including ultrasounds, free STI testing, treatment and education.

Merritt encourages participants to sign up by Monday to avoid registration fee increase and ensure participants receive a T-shirt.
