Wendell Foster filled the streets with hundreds of runners and supporters for the third time with their annual Half Marathon, drawing people from across the nation and even overseas.

Kara Howard, Vice President of Development & Community Engagement at Wendell Foster, said the race drew more than 600 participants from at least 15 different states, plus one racer in Germany participating remotely.

One of the racers was with the organization Marathons With Meaning, which aims to provide people who are unable to run marathons on their own the ability and experience.

“He came all the way from Seattle, Washington,” Howard said. “He wants them to be able to participate. He does that by pushing them. It’s really inspirational.”

Last year’s race was forced to move to a virtual format. Howard said she along with the 150 volunteers were excited to bring it back to an in-person event, and said it would not be possible without the sponsors or the City’s help.

“The City has been phenomenal to work with on this project for us,” Howard said. “Local law enforcement is involved. AMR, first responders, fire department and all of them are here in support.”

Throughout the 13.1-mile course, there were water stations and students from Owensboro High School dressed in costumes to cheer on the runners.

The half marathon also functions as a fundraiser for the organization. Howard said the money will go toward the daily functions of Wendell Foster.
