The 49th Annual Owensboro Dust Bowl returns next month, and the long-running tradition will offer something new this year — a 3-on-3 format for all age divisions. The entry deadline is July 1, with competition slated for July 19-23.

The 3-on-3 competitions will be played on half courts, and the roster limit is four players per team.

“It was a recommendation of a committee member since there are some professional 3-on-3 games gaining popularity. Some celebrities have leagues like Ice Cube, and even the Olympics are doing 3-on-3,” said Byron Owen, Dust Bowl President.

Each division also includes the traditional 5-on-5 full court format.

Divisions include Men’s Open or Women’s Open; High School Boys or High School Girls (9th-12th grades); JV Boys or JV Girls (9th-10th grades); 7th-8th grade Boys or Girls; 5th-6th grade Boys or Girls; 3rd-4th grades and under Boys or Girls.

As they’re nearing the 50-year mark, Owen said he is glad to have been involved with the Dust Bowl since it start began.

“I’ve been involved since I was 13 when I volunteered. I’ve coached teams in the Dust Bowl. Later on, I became a committee member and now serving as president of the bowl Dust Bowl since 2015,” Owen said.

He said he plans to announce a committee that will be dedicated to organizing the 50th Dust Bowl, which he expects to be his last as president.

Owen said that with the update to this year’s schedule they are able to pull together more of the traditional nightly themes, with Praise in the Park on July 17 to kick off Dust Bowl week and Kids Day on July 20.

Additionally, through a partnership with Cape Air, they will be giving away two round-trip tickets to St. Louis on July 23.
