Veterans Empowered Together (V.E.T.) hosted a cornhole tournament fundraiser Saturday, raising $1,800 for St. Benedict’s Honor Veterans Home.

Brian Basham said the V.E.T. organization strives to have good, meaningful connections with the community. With the work that the homeless shelter is doing, he thought there was no better way to help them than through the partnership.

“They have a lot of needs, so we thought ‘what can we do to raise some money and still people have fun?’ So that’s how we came up with the cornhole tournament, and all the proceeds are going to St. Benedict’s Homeless Shelter,” Basham said.

They were also able to gift first- and second-place cash prizes and give free custom V.E.T. cornhole boards.

The event drew almost a dozen teams.

Basham said they plan to have more events with the community going forward, with a focus on shaping the way the veterans in the community connect.

“Our goal is to build a better veteran community due to our connections with our community partners,” he said.

Basham said there will be a military ball coming up in November, and they plan to take December off to plan the next year of events.

“We want to connect the veterans in the community and get that sense of brotherhood that we kind of had while we’re in the military,” Basham said.
