The fourth annual Wendell Foster Half Marathon will take place Nov. 12, and for the first time there will also be a 5k race.

“We are excited to offer a 5k route to this year’s race so even more community members can join Wendell Foster as part of our mission: empowering people with disabilities,” said race director Kara Howard.

The race will start and finish at the riverfront by Smothers Park and begins at 7:30 a.m. on November 12.

Registration is currently open. The half marathon is $80, while the 5k is $30 for adults and $20 for children. Expo and packet pick-up for the race will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Owensboro Convention on November 11.

“Each year, half marathon runners have shared a favorite part of the race has been running through Wendell Foster’s campus at mile one, where they are greeted with cheers from people we support and staff members,” she said. “We are thrilled 5k runners will get to experience this too.”

The race committee is still searching for volunteers, ranging from road monitors and cheering sections to individuals to assist with passing out water and registration. To volunteer, click here or contact volunteer coordinator Sarah Poole by phone at 270-852-1450 or by email at [email protected]

“This event would not be possible without our hundreds of volunteers,” Howard said. “We are so appreciative of those that come out and support us. Please consider volunteering your time for this memorable event.”

Road closures for the event are as follows:

  • J.R. Miller Boulevard from 18th Street to Salem Drive on November 12 beginning at 7 a.m. and extending into late morning.
  • Portions of Ford and Griffith Avenue, beginning at 7 a.m. and extending into the late morning
  • Portions of Veteran’s Boulevard at various times
