Owensboro Dance Theatre is presenting its 4th annual Dance Battle Extravaganza this Saturday at the RiverPark Center.
The event begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale and start at $15. The event is sponsored by Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline.
The first act of the program features Giordano Dance Chicago, a professional jazz dance company that has been described by Lauren Warnecke of the Chicago Tribune as an “American Jazz Royalty.”
“The powerful, passionate and energetic movements will leave you wanting more,” said Natalie Lopez co-artistic director of Owensboro Dance Theatre.
The second act showcases members of ODT’s pre-professional dance company performing “Love Me,” a work choreographed by Skyler Newcom of Giordano Dance Company.
“This piece stresses the importance and beauty of unity and love, the perfect start to a second act sharing unity through dance,” Lopez said.
Dancers will perform in battles and each represents various schools and organizations within the community, including Burns Middle School Dance Team, Owensboro High and Middle schools, Aubrey’s Song Foundation, GRADSA, Musick Studios and Sutton Elementary’s Dance Team.
After a post-round discussion, votes will be cast by the three community guest judges – Patti Jenkins, Sargent Hunter Hinton of the Owensboro Police Department, and Griffin Glasscock Townsend.
At the end of round three, the audience will vote for the grand champion, winning a $1,000 prize. The evening concluded with all dancers on stage standing together “as a community united through dance,” Lopez stated.
The event serves as a fundraiser for ODT’s Triple A outreach programming that brings dance to over 15,000 community members yearly.
