The Owensboro Police Department is bringing back their Run From the Cops 5K Run/Walk on April 22 after a 3-year hiatus. The event helps raise funds for the department with a goal of also building bonds with community members.

Money raised goes toward for specialty units including D.A.R.E., Hazard Device Unit, Accident Reconstruction, Canine, and several others.

Event Organizer Jason Goddard said its just as important for the community to be able to connect with OPD officers during the event.

“We’re not looked at in the best light at times. We go to calls and some people see us in a negative fashion. So this is a way where you come to the department and see us in a positive fashion. You can poke fun at us; hopefully, we have some officers that will run with you in this race,” Goddard said.

The race encourages costumes, and the best will even receive a crown after the race. Goddard said he’s seen racers come dressed as cops, robbers, and prisoners — all playing to the title of Run from the Cops.

Approximately 100 racers have already signed up, and Goddard is hoping they can hit the 200 mark.

“We usually get a strong turnout from the community. We expect to have a strong turnout again this year,” he said.

Signups are open until the day of the race; however, only those who sign up before April 12 will receive a shirt and a racer’s packet on April 20.

The cost to participate is $30 for adults and $20 for those 17 and under. All Kentucky law enforcement receive a 50% discount.
