Owensboro High School will be hosting a free percussion concert on Thursday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the OHS auditorium.

OHS band director Aaron Klausing said that as far as he knows, there is only one other school in the country who does anything like this.

This is the sixth percussion showcase concert Klausing has produced and the show is formatted the same each year with over 50 singers, drama and art students, band musicians and percussion performers.

This year’s show is called “Spark” and it focuses on the creative energy and imagination children have and how the performers tap into that “spark” as they age.

“I try to use almost all the art disciplines when developing this original show from scratch,” Klausing said. “For this year’s show, we also have included a children’s book that is matched up with a specific song that tells the story of the book. It’s pretty cool!”

Several passages from memorable childhood stories are shared and media images take audience members through the story as musicians play relatable songs using traditional instruments and more creative and non-traditional instruments to create the rhythms.

“It’s really a celebration of all the art forms combined into one jam-packed production,” Klausing said. “There is a stage full of drums, percussion instruments, marching band equipment and tons of electronic equipment. In addition to all that, we also put a light show along with our production.”
